Tegning, form og farge

A project by Bendik Kaltenborn

Kunsthall Stavanger is proud to present Tegning, Form og Farge, an extensive presentation of illustrator Bendik Kaltenborn's work to date.

As a freelance illustrator, Kaltenborn’s distinctive designs have appeared in magazines such as The New Yorker and the New York Times, have become synonymous with the album covers of record producer Todd Terje, and have appeared as advertisements for theater performances and governmental offices, among others. His striking typographic style, characterized by assertive lines, sharp angles and predominantly bold, flat color fields, easily catches the eye and draws viewers in to appreciate more nuanced details. The recognizable imagery and nonsensical humor of Kaltenborn’s designs are reminiscent of a train of thought – a wandering mind visualized on paper.

The exhibition at Kunsthall Stavanger is a retrospective of Kaltenborn’s work and includes prints and a selection of original artworks spanning the entirety of his professional career. The exhibition is accompanied by the publication Tegning, Form og Farge, a collection of over 300 pages of the artist’s work along with a selection of texts and commentary further elucidating Kaltenborn’s work and creative process.

Kaltenborn is a Norwegian illustrator living in Oslo, who illustrates for the New York Times and The New Yorker on a regular basis, as well as handling the visual communication of DJ, song writer and record producer Todd Terje. He has a BA in Visual Communication from The National Academy of the Arts, Oslo, and a MA in Graphic Design and Illustration from Konstfack University College of Arts, Stockholm. After returning to Oslo in 2008 he has received several awards for his illustrations. Kaltenborn is also a cartoonist, and is co-founder and part of the Norwegian comic collective Dongery. His latest comic book was published in 2009. Titled “Serier som vil deg vel”, it received several awards, including the Ministry of Culture's “Tegneserieprisen”. His latest publication, “Tegning, form og farge”, is a collection of works from his ten years as an illustrator. He has participated in several exhibitions, both in Norway and internationally.

The exhibition has received generous support from Norske Kunstforeninger.
