“By privileging one type of message over another, we are, through repetition, setting the terms of our cultural and political discourse.”
Join Kunsthall Stavanger and Nuart for UTOPIA MYOPIA, a day-long workshop with artists Jordan Seiler and Mathieu Tremblin. Participants will begin with a presentation by the artists and stay for a hands-on workshop with one of the world’s leading Adbusters.
Seiler’s work as an artist, activist and academic challenges the role of commercial media in our public spaces, and questions what these messages say about our larger priorities as a society. He believes it is important to be cognizant of the monopolization of our public visual environment for commercial concerns, and work to determine for ourselves our collective social agenda. By reclaiming our streets and demanding a visual landscape that reflects the public’s concerns, Seiler’s work calls upon this prized and shared civic resource to host the revolution once again.
Mathieu Tremblin implements simple and playful processes of action inspired by anonymous, autonomous and spontaneous practices and expressions in urban space in order to question the systems of legislation, representation and symbolization of the city. He works with site specific urban intervention, walk and tour, tools design, objects hacking and uses text, publication, installation, photography and video to document or reinvest of his experimentations.
Jordan Seiler (b. New York City, 1979) lives and works in New York City. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design for photography. Mathieu Tremblin (b. Le Mans, 1980) lives in Strasbourg, France and works in Europe. He is currently doing a PhD in Strasbourg University, France.
