We welcome school classes to the spring education program at Kunsthall Stavanger for 7th grade through Vg3 (final year of upper secondary school). With the help of our skilled educator, students will create their very own news broadcast! The theme of the program is: The Role of Media in Our Everyday Lives.

Participation in the program is free, but registration is required.

The education program is based on the exhibition Vision Machines, featuring works by groundbreaking American artist and filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh. The exhibition addresses current issues related to gender, identity, technology, global conflicts, and climate change. It runs from February 24 to May 29, and the workshops take place during this same period.

Through a combination of guided tour and workshop, students will use the exhibition as a starting point to discuss and work with questions such as:

How can media present the same content in different ways?

Through a combination of guided tour and workshop, students will use the exhibition as a starting point to discuss and work with questions such as:

  • How can media present the same content in different ways?

  • Who decides what we see in the news?

  • How do we actually experience news?

These questions will be explored in an engaging and hands-on way. Together with our skilled educators, each class will produce their own live news broadcast at the end of the workshop.

The program is intended for grades 7–Vg3 and is adapted to each class's age level.
Duration: Two school hours (approximately 90 minutes).
The program is conducted together with one of our educators.
School classes are limited to 30 participants.
Group sizes over 20 students require two teachers/adults in addition to our educator.

Duration: 90 minutes

IMPLEMENTATION

Upon arrival, the class will receive an introduction to the exhibition.
They will view two selected works before gathering in our children’s workshop space.

In the workshop, we begin by discussing what we’ve seen and exploring the questions the exhibition raises.
Some of Peggy Ahwesh’s works, for example, deal with war.
With the ongoing war in Ukraine, this can be a particularly difficult topic for some students.
Some may feel sad or find it hard to watch these videos.
We will talk about these feelings and ask:

  • What can we do when we experience these emotions?

  • How can we take care of one another?

Peggy Ahwesh’s work highlights how the way something is shown affects how we perceive it.
This applies to almost all the information we receive — including the news.
We discuss questions such as:

  • Is the media neutral?

  • What is the role of the media?

  • Who can create and share news?

Students will discuss in small groups before coming together for a class discussion.

But — we also need to have some fun!
Not all news has to be serious.
Some news is meant to entertain and make us laugh.

The teacher will help divide the class into groups.
Each group will produce and perform their own "Good Morning Show" — live for the rest of the class.

Each group must have:

  • An editor-in-chief

  • A designer

  • One or two news anchors

  • A field reporter

  • A guest

  • A costume coordinator

  • Someone in charge of setting up the TV studio and props

Each “broadcast” should last about 8 minutes and include:

  • One interview

  • One feel-good story

  • A segment with a field reporter

The class will receive suggested stories, such as:

  • “New research shows that candy makes you super strong – 13-year-old lifts a car!”

  • “More middle schoolers receive letters from Hogwarts. Reporter meets students heading for the train.”

During the workshop, students will have access to a wide range of costumes and props, as well as a fully set-up TV studio. The session ends with a group reflection.
